She/They | Associate Art Therapist
Kiersten Carroll, ATP
I seek to understand the world from each participant’s distinctive viewpoint, recognizing that the individual is the expert on their own life. My aim through the process of Art Therapy is to curate a safe, creatively engaging space for clients to express themselves within, as a result building greater connections with themselves as well as their surrounding community.
Something I learned in graduate school that stuck with me: it’s not about being good at creativity, it’s about creativity being good for you. Engaging in creative processes can be a wonderful tool to support social skill-building, enhance emotional regulation, reprocess trauma, and much more.

How I Got Here
I am very familiar with the challenges that severe mental health, pervasive substance use, and poverty can have on a family system and the community beyond. I'm passionate about supporting individuals from all walks of life who are suffering, because I believe in the power of community and how transformative healthy relationships can be for society as a whole. We are not meant to heal in isolation-- I believe we thrive when helping others AND when we can ask for help when needed.
My Approach to Therapy
I work with each client to build goals and treatment plans that support the client’s needs and interests. We can walk (or draw) the path of healing and growth together, maintaining awareness that every path looks different and that is not only okay, but it's something to celebrate!

I work with clients of all backgrounds and have experience supporting youth and teens struggling with substance use or behavioral challenges, neurodiverse individuals, and adults with dual-diagnosis mental health & substance use disorders. I feel especially passionate working with individuals from low-income and marginalized communities, because they are often most overworked and overlooked.

I love to facilitate therapeutic groups, because it's a special experience to see people supporting one-another and growing together through difficult life circumstances. I'm able to rely on my ability to be present and authentic in the work that I do, and I enjoy bringing a sense of humor as well as play into the therapeutic space; I view these as strengths when helping to build rapport with clients of any age and demographic, making the space less stuffy than perhaps a traditional talk therapy office may feel.
One thing that instantly makes my day better…
Spending time with animals, being near or in bodies of water, and laying underneath trees is how I find rest and recoup from the busy world of capitalism. Hiking, walking, biking and making ART are all activities that fill my soul to the brim!
